Nanopublication — The archive's surface persists; the rule read over it is seized back
The given/instituted split (P3a) grips cleanly on what the archive's material surface does across readers and decades; it reaches a hard edge where the model's single-emitter, disclosed-codex dialogue meets a counter-institution imposed, generations later, on a surface made and left uncritiqued by others — a condition P3a was not built to describe, and P21 has no vocabulary for distinguishing from mere borrowing.
Context
ⓘ Thin page — the source itself is thin (teaser, notice, paywalled preamble). Distinct from truncation: nothing was cut by the pipeline.
What the source says [1]
In this interview, Brazilian artist Rosana Paulino discusses her 2016 book ¿História Natural?, which reworks the 19th-century European naturalist album — specifically altered prints from photographs taken for Louis Agassiz's 1865–66 Brazil expedition — through collage, stitching, linocut and drypoint, and deliberately smeared lettering. She states the project exists because Brazil absorbed these European-made images of itself and of Black Brazilians into its own schoolbooks for decades 'without any critique,' and she means the book to force a different reading of the same archive against the people who produced it.
Where the lens grips
P3a's given/instituted split finds real purchase here. The measurable surface — Agassiz's photographic plates, the album layout, the printed lettering — is the given material: the same surface Brazilian schoolbooks reproduced for decades. Paulino's account of that reproduction as happening 'without any critique' is exactly the mute condition P3a predicts: a given invariant received with no instituted rule activated. Her stated intervention — collage, stitching, lettering 'smeared with intention' — does not change that surface's material facts so much as it installs a different rule over the same relations, which is what she means by a 'treatise on how Black people... have been represented.' The deliberate, engineered character of the alteration ('even the lettering is smeared with intention') also reads as a structured disruption rather than an accident, consonant with the induced-diffraction model (P26): the wave is built to resist easy recognition, not left to chance.
Where it breaks
The edge is not a refutation but a scope question. P3a's dialogue model assumes a single intending emitter whose codex a receiver can request and activate. Here the given layer was encoded by Agassiz's expedition and relayed, uncritiqued, by Brazilian institutions — Paulino is not that emitter, and there is no dialogue in which the original makers disclose anything. She installs a counter-rule on an archive she did not originate, against people who are not present to be asked. P21 (Codex Authenticity) is similarly silent here: it has vocabulary for naively borrowing another's codex ('counterfeit,' 'fashion') but none for adversarial reuse of someone else's given material as a weapon against the rule that made it — Paulino's stated aim is neither to relay the colonial wave nor to build an unrelated one of her own, and P21 does not distinguish these.
Propositional grid [2]
Read this grid. “Not evaluated” does not mean the source has nothing to say about that proposition. It means the reading did not instruct it. That is not a result, and it counts in no denominator. A silence, by contrast, is a finding: the reading touched the proposition without concluding, or noted its absence itself.

What was instructed. These propositions have been judged and carry a current statement: it is that statement the reading tested, not the founding one.
- P3a — judged in Note 05 · current statement : say GIVEN invariant and INSTITUTED invariant, never 'physical' and 'intentional' — the axis is MODE OF EXISTENCE, read as regime of access: the given is what a sensor measures on the surface WITHOUT the codex; the instituted is the rule that elects relations in that surface and that only the disclosed codex deciphers
