Nanopublication — Kant's categories are necessary for every mind; the codex is built by one — the given/instituted axis holds its shape and loses its modality

The given/instituted axis grips the shape of Kant's argument (a given manifold underdetermines; only a rule confers unity) but the grip stops exactly where necessity enters: Kant's rule binds universally and independently of recognition, the codex's rule exists only through being met and recognized. The boundary is modal, not structural — the finding is where the analogy must be read as shape-only to remain honest.

What the source says [1]

The SEP entry reconstructs Kant's transcendental arguments: starting from an uncontroversial premise about experience or self-consciousness, each argument claims that a substantive, unobvious condition is necessary for that premise to hold. The Transcendental Deduction argues that mere Humean association of sense impressions cannot explain the universality and necessity found in our experience of objects, and that only synthesis by a priori concepts (the categories), operating through judgment, can. The Refutation of Idealism argues that determining the temporal order of my own past experiences requires perceiving permanent objects outside me in space. Later sections track descendants of this strategy against external-world and moral-responsibility skepticism, and the persistent objection, from Stroud onward, that such arguments at best show how we must think, not how the world must be.

Where the lens grips

P3a's given/instituted axis and P9's 'unity is instituted, an effect of the codex, not its ground' find a sharp structural analogue here: Kant's manifold of intuition is exactly a 'given' in the P3a sense — what is there prior to any rule — and the categories, deployed through synthesis, are exactly an 'instituted' layer in that sense — a rule that elects relations in the given and confers unity it does not otherwise have. P11's reformulation ('access runs through the rule, not the organ') is argued for almost verbatim by Kant's anti-associationist move: word-association (a paradigm of organ-level, sense-bound ordering) cannot produce the universality and necessity that mark genuine objecthood; only a rule-governed faculty can. The source performs, independently and in its own vocabulary, the same move the framework asserts: given alone underdetermines; a rule is what supplies unity.

Where it breaks

The disanalogy is in the modal status of the rule. Kant's categories are transcendentally necessary — the same rule for every finite rational subject, a condition of the possibility of experience as such, binding whether or not the subject recognizes or can articulate it; indeed the whole argument is addressed to a skeptic who refuses to grant it. P3a's instituted invariant is explicitly the opposite kind of thing: singular, artist-built, proto-codex before crystallization (P14a), revisable, and — per P3a's own clause — existing 'as soon as its rule is met and recognized, including by whoever refuses it,' which makes recognition constitutive in a way Kant's categories never require. This slips IF one reads the given/instituted axis as importing Kant's transcendental necessity for the codex's authority — the resonance would then overreach, since the one feature doing Kant's argumentative work (universal bindingness independent of any particular rule-maker) is precisely what the codex, by the framework's own description, lacks. It holds, i.e. the resonance stays legitimate and bounded, if 'instituted' is read exactly as P3a states it: a stipulated, codex-relative, recognition-dependent rule, structurally parallel to Kant's category-synthesis but modally a different kind of thing.

Propositional grid [2]

Read this grid. “Not evaluated” does not mean the source has nothing to say about that proposition. It means the reading did not instruct it. That is not a result, and it counts in no denominator. A silence, by contrast, is a finding: the reading touched the proposition without concluding, or noted its absence itself.

What was instructed. These propositions have been judged and carry a current statement: it is that statement the reading tested, not the founding one.

  • P3a — judged in Note 05 · current statement : say GIVEN invariant and INSTITUTED invariant, never 'physical' and 'intentional' — the axis is MODE OF EXISTENCE, read as regime of access: the given is what a sensor measures on the surface WITHOUT the codex; the instituted is the rule that elects relations in that surface and that only the disclosed codex deciphers
  • P9 — judged in Note 02 · current statement : unity is INSTITUTED — an effect of the codex, not its ground
  • P11 — judged in Note 03 · current statement : access runs through the RULE, not the organ — the senses are not ouvertures; probe the codex instead
